Different but very enjoyable!
Got a last minute ticket to this concert and expected to have a serious trip down memory lane with J. Cole and be rocked by The Pretenders. As I approached the line to enter, paper signs were taped up indicating that The Pretenders were not performing due to illness, which was a bummer. It did give the option for a full refund if you did not want to see J. Cole and did not enter the arena, which made sense. When she took the stage, she was clear upfront about telling the background behind her songs, which I appreciated knowing about the format of her show. There was no replacement opening act so we sat for an hour before J. Cole began. It took me awhile to acclimate to the story telling part but I really did like it and learned a lot. Still, it was a bit disorienting. Her voice is still beautiful and distinctive, but it sounded like she sang the choruses of some of her hit songs differently, perhaps to accommodate her 68 year old voice. She was on stage for a full 2 1/2 hours, singing and twirling along with telling her stories which actually made me appreciate the unfamiliar songs. Loved the one she wrote after seeing Twilight. No judgement in that comment - she is still absolutely amazing - it just made for an awkward sing-along because we all know the words to so many of her hits. I really really enjoyed the concert as a whole and would see her again. Incredibly talented performer, a national treasure for sure!
